My Roommate Brought Something into the House

For the longest time, I had an empty spare bedroom in my house. It was so empty, it echoed. I never used it for storage or anything and I couldn't tell you why. My family never came to visit me in this town and I was doing well enough to not need a roommate. Until now. Well, I didn't need one and roommate is the best term for this situation. It was just someone who would rent out the room for three hundred bucks a month, just so I can have some extra cash to put away for emergencies or bills.

James was just a regular person when I met him and interviewed him for the room. He'd have full range of the house, he'd just have to pay for the groceries for himself and help with the electric bill. He'd just moved to this small town from New York so it was quite an adjustment for him. He worked late at an office building in town full time so being able to pay his own way wouldn't be a problem.

As he signed the paperwork I wrote up for a lease, I uncrossed my legs, ready to get to my feet. "So is there anything else I should know at all? I'm sure we've covered everything but you never know," I said.

"There is one thing," he said. "I get off work very late sometimes, around twelve and one in the morning. So if I wake you up at all from that, don't bother investigating. It's just me," he stated.

I gave him a nod. "Then, we've got a deal."

James was there for roughly a month and so far, it was going smoothly. He kept to himself most of the time, unless we were both making a meal in the kitchen or I was passing his room as he was coming out of it to go downstairs. No matter what, in order to get downstairs, I had to pass his room. I had noticed he never closed the door all the way at night, even when he was gone.

I had gone over to my friend's house who was going through a difficult breakup. A bottle of wine and five hours later, I was dragging my half drunkened self home. Of course, I don't recommend drinking and driving but since my friend lived so close to me, I did it anyway. I pulled into my driveway around two in the morning and saw that none of the lights in the house were on. James's car was parked at the curb so I assumed he had already gone to sleep. I kicked my shoes off at the door and turned the yard light off before heading for the stairs. I had always kept a nightlight on in the hallway since there was no overhead light so that was the only thing guiding my way.

The house being so quiet was really unsettling. I was normally asleep by ten and I could just feel how heavy my eyes were getting. Just getting myself up the stairs was a battle. James's door was open and the nightlight showed the foot of his bed. I could hear him snoring as I tiptoed past his room. For some reason, I glanced inside and what I was hearing wasn't snoring.

Standing over his bed, there was a tall humanoid-looking figure. It's back was hunched over and its shoulders raised with each heavy, croaky breath it took. It looked naked, and had grey skin. It was sickly skinny and lanky-- I could see each notch in its spine-- and had black, stringy hair that hung down in its face. I felt frozen where I stood, just watching this thing hover over my roommate.

When it reached a bony finger out toward James's head, I took a step to sneak to my room. The floor creaked loudly under my foot and that was when it whipped its head around before I could even react. It had glowing green eyes that looked sunken in and no nose. It's mouth was hanging open and I could see razor sharp teeth snarling back at me. Its breathing intensified but it didn't move. I kept eye contact as I slowly backed up to my room my room. I reached my door and I looked away to find the knob. Glancing back, I could feel my heart in my throat. Its hand was wrapped on the doorframe as it peeked around the corner, those green eyes staring right into my soul.

I escaped in my room and shut the door and locked it. I could hear footsteps scurrying up the hall and stopping on the other side of the wall. It slammed a hand against the wood and scraped its long claws down it multiple times. I grabbed my lamp to use as a weapon when the doorknob started to rattle violently. Then, it stopped just as suddenly as it had started. I could still hear its heavy, heavy, hoarse breathing.

I didn't sleep the rest of the night, not until the sun came up. I couldn't. That thing stood outside my door the whole rest of the night and I don't even remember it leaving. James was well rested when I saw him during lunch. I never told him about what I saw in his room that wanted to attack me. I don't know why, but I'm beginning to think I'm going to have to... if I get the chance to.

The thing visits my room every night now, around one or two a.m. It never comes in because I remember to lock the door. But tonight, I forgot. It didn't dawn on me until I heard its heavy footsteps on the floorboards and its heavy breathing outside the door. I try not to make any sound and I'm not even exhaling and inhaling properly. I can't. One small move, I know that'll be it. Maybe it'll leave eventually and go back into James's room for a visit. I also just remembered that James is on a business trip in Seattle. I'm this thing's priority now and sunrise isn't until six. I'm alone. It's standing over me now, its breath is hot and rotten. Its eyes are casting that green glow on the wall. Man, I wish I had never gotten a roommate.
